It’s not easy to find good art this far from a big city. Portland is over an hour away, lots of good galleries there. Portsmouth has a vibrant and growing art community, the first Thursday night is always worth a visit. Here in North Conway there’s an Art Association, and a few other exhibits here and there, Jackson, Bridgton, Maine and now Fryeburg Academy has a gorgeous new exhibition space. There’s one other bright spot in the area, the Gaffney Library, built in the 1920 or so it’s a small public library just off of Route 16 in Sanbornville. Sure, you say library, not so great for art to be seen, but you’d be wrong. They keep the stacks short, no floor to ceiling shelves here. The 1920 woodwork, molding and details make the building a work of art, alone. My sister and I had a show at “The Gaffney” a few months ago, I was amazed at the turn out of art enthusiasts turned out, families with young kids came out to get a taste of abstract painting and photography. Great conversation about art were scattered throughout the volumes. Not only does “The Gaffney” display art, but they’re the heart of the small town trapped between the Lakes Region and the White Mountains. Lots of people count on the library for internet, movies, audio books and even good ole’ books.
Here’s the kicker, they do an art show every year to raise funds for the library. It’s run by a guy named Peter and he collects art from artists from all over the area and puts on one hell of a show. When Peter asked if I would like to be involved, it was a pretty easy to say yes. I’m happy help keep a great piece of New Hampshire alive and well. The show details are in the poster below. If you’re in the area and want to see some art come on over and say Hi to me if I’m there, if not make sure you say Hi to Peter and thank him for his effort in keeping Art alive in New Hampshire.

Hey Joe….thanks for the kind words about our Gafney Library. We take pride in our offerings and are grateful for the work Peter Abate puts into our monthly art exhibits. We particularly appreciate the many hours it takes him to pull together the annual Art At The Gafney fundraiser which kicks off tonight between 4:00 and 7:30…hope to see you here! Over 104 pieces of work….a phenomenal exhibit this year, our third annual event.
